Use the right channel

Our different Slack channels exist with a specific topic/purpose. It’s important that we make it possible for members of the community to opt-in to various types of conversations by keeping conversations around specific topics in their appropriate channels.

Use Threads
The best way to keep conversations coherent in Slack is to use threads. Here are some guidelines on how to use threads effectively:

  1. Type your question out as one message rather than separate messages
  2. Leverage Slack's edit functionality if you realize you forgot to add something to your question rather than adding new messages.

Mentions
Use direct mentions mindfully. Slack will notify someone every time you mention them. Before you mention someone, make sure that you want that person to act on something, and make it clear what that is.

The @channel and @here functions in Slack are disabled for everyone except admins.

Public Channels vs Direct Messaging
Unless you have someone’s express permission to contact them directly, do not directly message members of this community to solicit help, sell a product, or recruit for a role.

We highly value the time community members put into helping each other, and we have precisely zero tolerance for people who abuse their access to experienced professionals. If you are being directly messaged by members of the community asking for assistance without your consent, let us know.

Respect Confidentiality and Intellectual Property
Please do not post or link to any private information (your own or others’). This includes credit card numbers, passwords, product/API keys or any sensitive personally identifiable information, such as social security numbers, address, or anything that may be considered the intellectual property of someone else or of a company

Be mindful that things you say here may at some point become public. While we expect members to honor the confidentiality of this space, we cannot guarantee that they will do so--nor can we guarantee that every member's login credentials and logged-in devices are secure. Please exercise caution and refrain from sharing sensitive information that could harm you or others if it became public.

Unacceptable Behaviour


Harassment

Harassment includes:

  1. Harassment of any participants in any form
  2. Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
  3. Logging or taking screenshots of online activity for harassment purposes
  4. Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission
  5. Violent threats or language directed against another person
  6. Incitement of violence or harassment towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm
  7. Creating additional online accounts in order to harass another person or circumvent a ban
  8. Sexual language and imagery in online communities or in any conference venue, including talks
  9. Insults, put downs, or jokes that are based upon stereotypes, that are exclusionary, or that hold others up for ridicule
  10. Excessive swearing
  11. Unwelcome sexual attention or advances
  12. Unwelcome physical contact, including simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like "hug" or "backrub") without consent or after a request to stop
  13. Pattern of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others
