Use the right channel
Our different Slack channels exist with a specific topic/purpose. It’s important that we make it possible for members of the community to opt-in to various types of conversations by keeping conversations around specific topics in their appropriate channels.
The best way to keep conversations coherent in Slack is to use threads. Here are some guidelines on how to use threads effectively:
Use direct mentions mindfully. Slack will notify someone every time you mention them. Before you mention someone, make sure that you want that person to act on something, and make it clear what that is.
The @channel and @here functions in Slack are disabled for everyone except admins.
Public Channels vs Direct Messaging
Unless you have someone’s express permission to contact them directly, do not directly message members of this community to solicit help, sell a product, or recruit for a role.
We highly value the time community members put into helping each other, and we have precisely zero tolerance for people who abuse their access to experienced professionals. If you are being directly messaged by members of the community asking for assistance without your consent, let us know.
The following behaviours are expected of all community members:
Members of the community conduct themselves in a professional manner. Be Open Members of the community are open to collaboration.
Members of the community are respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints and experiences.
Members of the community are considerate of their peers and their commitments, skills, and efforts.
Members of the community are accepting of all who wish to take part in our activities, fostering an environment where anyone can participate and everyone can make an impact.
Gracefully Accept Constructive Criticism
When we disagree, we are courteous in raising our issues.
